Back Ground

The 43rd Wessex division was a territorial division just recently arrived in Normandy.  It had very few veterans, but had spent years training in England. The division played a small role in Operation Epson, but had not seen much actual combat (except for the 1st Worchester battalion).

Their opponents were the 10th SS panzer division, a veteran unit brought in from the Russian front.  It was able to rest and refit in Holland before being sent to Normandy, but was only around 70% strength.  It had no Panther or Assault Gun battalions, although the 102nd SS Tiger battalion was used as its second tank battalion.  The division had been engaged during operation Epson, but not as heavily as its sister division 9th SS Panzer division.

Order of Battle

 Initial British Attack Force

Five battalions of infantry from the 129th and 130th Infantry Brigades.

Five squadrons of Churchill tanks from the 7th and 9th Royal Tank Regiments

Massive artillery bombardment from the Field Artillery Regiments of four divisions (43rd, 11th, 15th, 53rd), heavy guns from the 3rd and 5th AGRA’s.

Germans Defending Hill 112

Five battalions of grenadiers from the 21st and 22nd Panzer Grenadier Regiments.

Two Pz IV and two Stug Companies from the 10th SS Tank Regiment

Nebelwefers from the 8th Werfer Brigade

Objectives

Phase One – Take Hill 112, Fontaine and Eterville.

Phase Two – Consolidate positions on Hill 112, Take Maltot

This would trigger the 214th Brigade assault to secure the Orne river crossings. Which would allow 4th Armored Brigade to leap across the Odon river into the open tank country and begin the sought after breakout. The Germans knew this and had been resisting all attempts to do this for the last month.
